Eagle Claw Kung Fu training at Shadow Fist

Kung Fu Sash Library

Black SashFive Stripes

The fifth rank beyond black sash. Five Stripes training adds new techniques, forms, and conditioning on top of everything from the earlier ranks, sharpening speed, precision, and fighting intent.

About this rank

Each stripe beyond black sash marks another layer of the Eagle Claw curriculum. Five Stripes brings Hop Gin Kuen, the two-person combined combat set, with applied chin na, bridging, and timing work, alongside the conditioning that keeps advanced students sharp.

At Shadow Fist, Five Stripes material is taught step by step in class under your instructor's guidance, then refined at home with the training video below. Consistent practice between classes is what turns each technique into something you can use without thinking.

  • Rank: Black Sash, Five Stripes
  • Program: Eagle Claw Kung Fu
  • Focus: Hop Gin Kuen (two-person set)
  • Taught: In class, with a video for home practice

Train it with us

Five Stripes training continues in our Eagle Claw classes in Windsor Heights. Practice at home with the training video below, then refine it with your instructor on the mat.

Partner form at this rank

Hop Gin Kuen: Harmony War

Hop Gin Kuen, translated as Harmony War or combined combat, is a traditional paired fist form (doi kuen) in the Fan Zi Ying Jow Pai system. It is a pre-arranged two-person routine rather than a solo sequence, so the material is applied against a partner who moves, resists, and counters. The videos also introduce the sixth principle, Dui Cow Fing Law.

Applied chin na

Eagle Claw joint locks, tendon-separating techniques, and bone-breaking mechanics (fen jin, zuo gu) applied against an active, resisting opponent.

Distance and timing

The drill trains spatial awareness: exactly when to advance, when to close the gap, and when to yield to an incoming strike.

Bridge hand conditioning

Bridging means making contact with an opponent’s limbs to feel their intention, redirect their force (zhao nie, shiao fung), and counter instantly.

Harmony of offence and defence

True to the name, attacks convert seamlessly into defence, and each defence yields an opening for a submission or counter-strike.

Dui Cow Fing Law (6th principle)

The videos also introduce the sixth Eagle Claw principle, attack by pressing then brush off and push: crowd the opponent’s guard, then clear it aside to open the counter.
