Tai Chi sword practice at Shadow Fist

Advanced Form

Yang 32 SwordSword Form

The Yang style 32-step sword form, a compact Tai Chi sword set built from the longer traditional sword forms. It trains light, precise blade work with the same relaxed structure as the empty-hand form.

About the form

The Yang 32 Sword Form, also called Taijijian, teaches practitioners how to extend internal Tai Chi principles from the body into a physical weapon, with a focus on fluid body mechanics, balance, and basic sword-handling technique. Created in 1957 as a standardized introductory routine, it condenses the traditional, longer martial routines into an accessible 32-movement sequence built to develop coordination, focus, and holistic fitness.

The sword is an extension of the hand, so the same rules apply as in the slow form: the waist leads, the shoulders stay relaxed, and the movement stays continuous. At Shadow Fist, the Yang 32 sword is taught in class under your instructor’s guidance and supported by the training video below for practice at home. Learn the sequence slowly first; the precision comes from repetition, not from speed.

  • Focus: Sword mechanics, internal mechanics, and footwork
  • Type: Introductory weapon form (straight sword)
  • Style: Yang style Tai Chi
  • Taught: In class, with a video for home practice

Train it with us

The sword form is taught in our Tai Chi classes in Windsor Heights. Practice at home with the training video below, then refine it with your instructor on the mat.

What the form teaches

The core lessons

Fundamental sword mechanics (jian fa)

The form is a foundational blueprint for handling the Chinese straight sword, and it teaches specific sword techniques.

  • Basic strikes and chops: controlling offensive techniques such as thrusting (ci) and wheeling chops (gua / pi).
  • Defensive parries: directing defensive movements such as blocking (lan), sweeping (sao), and parrying.
  • The sword hand grip: alternating between an active right-hand grip and a defensive left-hand carry, and using the sword finger (jian zhi) with the free hand to maintain balance and direct energy.

Weapon extension and internal mechanics

One of the most important concepts taught is viewing the sword not as an external object, but as a seamless extension of the body’s energy (qi).

  • Dan tian centering: movements must not originate solely from the arm. Power is generated from the legs and guided by the dan tian, the body’s physical and energetic center, which channels energy through the arm and straight to the tip of the blade.

Footwork and physical conditioning

The form heavily integrates standard Tai Chi stances to cultivate lower-body strength and flexible movement.

  • Stance work: mastery of the bow stance (gong bu), empty stance (xu bu), and deep lunges.
  • Balance and rotation: single-leg stands, balanced leg raises, and sharp rotational pivots, which naturally enhance coordination and flexibility.
