Eagle Claw Kung Fu training at Shadow Fist

Advanced Form

Win SanCloudy Fan

A weapon form in the Eagle Claw curriculum using the fan, a short blade hidden in plain sight. Win San trains wrist control, close-range technique, and the footwork that keeps a short weapon useful at fighting distance.

About the form

Win San, the Cloudy Fan, is an advanced weapons training form in Northern Shaolin Eagle Claw Kung Fu, a standard part of the system’s curriculum rather than a broad concept. It is built around a short weapon. Because the fan has almost no reach, the footwork does most of the work: you have to close the distance, angle off, and keep the wrist relaxed so the fan can snap open and closed without the arm tensing up. The circular, clouding motion the form is named for comes from the waist, not the shoulder.

At Shadow Fist, Win San is taught in class under your instructor’s guidance and supported by the training video below for practice at home. Start with the footwork and the fan handling separately, then put them together once each part is comfortable.

  • Focus: Concealment, deflection, and cloud-like transitions
  • Type: Advanced weapon form (fan)
  • Style: Eagle Claw Kung Fu, Wu style Tai Chi
  • Taught: In class, with a video for home practice

Train it with us

Win San is taught in our Eagle Claw classes in Windsor Heights. Practice the form at home with the training video below, then refine it with your instructor on the mat.

What the form teaches

Working with the fan

Concealed and distraction tactics

The fan is traditionally used to block an opponent’s vision, hide an incoming strike, or create a sudden distraction with the noise of it snapping open.

Flay, slice, and strike mechanics

Training uses fluid movement where the edge or spine of the fan deflects a weapon, slices an exposed area, or delivers a targeted blunt strike to a pressure point.

Fluid defense

The form coordinates rapid, sweeping cloud-like hand and body transitions while holding to Eagle Claw’s core principles of redirection and agility.
