Eagle Claw Kung Fu training at Shadow Fist

Advanced Form

Fook Fu KuenControlling Tiger Fist

An advanced empty-hand form of the Eagle Claw system. Fook Fu Kuen, the Controlling Tiger Fist, teaches students to dominate an opponent's structure with pressing, controlling hands before finishing with committed strikes.

About the form

Fook Fu Kuen, also translated as Control the Tiger Fist or Subduing the Tiger Fist, is an advanced form in the Ying Jow Pai (Eagle Claw) system. It is built around control rather than trading blows: smothering an opponent’s arms, breaking their balance, and keeping them under pressure while you set up your own attack. Strong stances, heavy hands, and a calm, forward-driving intent are all part of the set.

At Shadow Fist, Fook Fu Kuen is taught step by step in class under your instructor’s guidance, then refined at home with the training video below. Practice builds the control, pressure, and rooted power that carry into the rest of the advanced curriculum.

What the form teaches

Core teachings and principles

Internal and external power (yin and yang)

The form explicitly uses chi, internal energy, to link movements, requiring the practitioner to transition smoothly between fast and slow and between hard and soft power.

Controlling force

It teaches advanced students how to regulate, harness, and release power with precision rather than relying purely on muscle tension.

Animal-style synthesis

Eagle Claw is best known for fast long fist striking, tumbling (fan zi), and the 108 joint-locking techniques of chin na. Fook Fu Kuen adds the heavier, grounding, overpowering traits associated with subduing a tiger, blending animal-inspired gripping, tearing, and structural control into the system.

Learn it in class

Videos support your practice, but forms are built in the studio. Bring your questions to class and your instructor will clean up the details.
